Subjunctive Made Simple: When and How to Use It (for English Speakers)
The Spanish subjunctive (subjuntivo) is one of the most challenging topics for English speakers — but it doesn’t have to be. In this guide we’ll break it down clearly and practically.
What is the Subjunctive?
The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense. It is used to express doubt, desire, emotion, recommendations, uncertainty, or hypothetical situations.
While English barely uses the subjunctive anymore, Spanish uses it constantly in daily conversation.
When to Use the Subjunctive (Main Triggers)
1. Desire, Wishes & Requests
- Quiero que vengas. (I want you to come.)
- Espero que estés bien. (I hope you are well.)
2. Emotions & Feelings
- Me alegra que hayas aprobado. (I’m glad you passed.)
- Tengo miedo de que llueva. (I’m afraid it might rain.)
3. Doubt or Uncertainty
- No creo que venga. (I don’t think he’s coming.)
- Es posible que llueva mañana.
4. Recommendations & Opinions
- Te recomiendo que estudies. (I recommend that you study.)
- Es importante que llegues temprano.
